SVA NATCON Day 3 and it's over!

First, mea culpa, I've been thinking Student Veterans of America this whole time but my tired brain has been telling my fingers to type Student Veterans Association. I get it---I'm sorry!

This day had several break out sessions but I have to say the keynote address [another TED type event] was given by Simon Sinek.  His bio bills him as a "visionary thinker with a rare intellect." My feeling was that he is a very thought provoking speaker and he did challenge my way of viewing the world!  I'm going to check out a few of his books to learn more...that in and of itself shows how much he got into my head!

The highlight of the day was the SVA Honors Banquet.  The actual awards came at the very end of the evening, but the speakers prior were a big draw.  Medal of Honor Recipient Kyle White motivated us to do more [and get involved in his new foundation].  Grammy nominated singer MAJOR was very popular and got the audience on their feet.  We were treated to a sneak preview of a television series coming soon called "68 Whiskey", which follows a group of medics through the current wars.  I got the feeling it was a bit like M*A*S*H on steroids for a new generation.  However, two of the lead actors came on the stage to thank the student veterans for their service and also handed out a major award.  The moderator for the evening was an actress who currently stars on "Law & Order:  Special Victims Unit"--Jamie Gray Hyder.  The gamers out there may know her better as Call of Duty's first female lead, Lt. Nora Salter, in COD: Infinite War.

I had one more opportunity to spend time with the VFW-SVA Legislative Fellows.  I really like this crew and I'm looking forward to seeing their final products.  I'm sure I'll be staying in touch with these amazing veterans as they progress in their careers.

Overall, I enjoyed seeing how these student veterans are making the transition from warrior to peacetime student and beyond.  They have a bond, they are cohesive, and they have a plan for their future.  I have a good feeling that over the next 10, 20, 30 years we are going to see the people in the room tonight being the movers and shakers in our country.  The next NATCON will be held 7-9 January at the Disney Coronado Resort in Orlando Florida.  Who knows, I may be reporting from there next year!

Working the VFW table this weekend were California State Junior Vice Commander Dusty and California State Adjutant Roger. THANK YOU for taking the time to do this.  You provided valuable awareness for these student veterans and it is very much appreciate.  Ryan is in the pic to make it look like they are working!
