Traditionally held on the third Friday of September, POW-MIA Day coincides with the birthday of the US Air Force this year. The day was established in 1979 through a proclamation signed by then President, Jimmy Carter.
The purpose of this special, solemn day is to pay our respects and honor former prisoners of war and those still held captive or are listed as missing in action.
In the true tradition of "leave no one behind", the United States continues the mission of repatriating our POWS and Missing from all wars and eras. Even if they are no longer living, these brave men and women deserve to come home. The Veterans of Foreign Wars stands firm on this goal and encourages Congress every year to continue the full funding of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency [DPAA], whose mission is to provide the fullest possible accounting of our missing personnel.
