November 9 is a federal observance
commemorating the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Designated in 2001 by President Bush, it
celebrates the end of communism in East Germany and the beginning of freedom
for Germans separated by the Iron Curtain.
The destruction of the wall paved the way for German reunification,
which formally took place on October 3, 1990.
